Default A Proposal To Help Corby Schapelle

Hello from Canada
You have all been working very hard to get Corby Schapelle out of jail for quite some time. I realize that I am new to all this; nevertheless I would like to offer a proposal to this forum. I don’t know if this has been tried before or what the results were, but here goes anyway.

Corby Schapelle is in jail for one simple reason: the Indonesians cannot or will not admit that they have made a mess of this thing since the beginning. We need to bypass the whole question of her guilt and innocence. Let’s make it possible for the Indonesian government to send her home without saying one word about how she got into this mess, or who is to blame.

Remember Granat? According to my online research, Granat is the biggest anti-drug NGO in Indonesia. During Corby’s trial, members of this organization were marching around outside the courtroom calling for her death – in front of her mother, no less.

All of which makes them perfect candidates for what I have in mind.

Corby desperately friends within Indonesia, and Granat is exactly what we’re looking for: a massive national organization with solid anti-drug credentials and contacts with people in power. And the fact that they wanted to kill her three years ago is icing on the cake.

Think I’m crazy? Well think about this.

The FPSS website has page after page of horror stories about young Australians stuck in Asian prisons. Unlike Ms. Schapelle, most of these people have confessed, and they have posted letters of their own, apologizing for their actions and pleading for mercy. There is clearly a need for an educational campaign to promote responsible behaviour when traveling abroad.

Corby Schapelle is the ideal candidate. She’s been through the Indonesian court system, she’s done hard time in their prisons, and she knows the awful fate awaiting those that trample on the hospitality of Australia’s neighbors. She’s attractive, she’s good with people, and she has a huge public following. If she talks, the people of Australia will listen.

But right now she’s a wasted asset in the war on drugs. What good does it do the people of Indonesia to have her sitting around in a cell doing nothing and feeling sorry for herself? Isn’t it better to put her to work for THEM, to solve THEIR problems?

So let’s form a partnership with Granat. Let’s sell them the idea of turning Corby Schapelle into an ally. Send her back to Australia, release her on parole, and put her to work. Send her to high schools and universities to talk to the students about the trouble that their behaviour is causing when they travel.

What bothers the Indonesians most? Drug mules? Sex tourists? Whatever message they want the people of Australia to hear, Corby Schapelle can deliver it.

And as for the Indonesian government? They can get rid of her once and for all, and no one can possibly complain! No new trial, no pardon, no embarrasing questions…all they have to do is sign a Prisoner Transfer Agreement in response to a sensible request from the biggest anti-drug organization in the country.

That’s the proposal, and if you think I’m crazy, prove it.

If you think its worthwhile, let’s get in touch with Granat and see what they say. I have been trying to find English language contact information for them for some time, so far without success. I would be quite happy to write the first letter.

I am going to close this with a very simple request.

DO NOT TELL CORBY OR HER FAMILY ABOUT THIS POSTING!

I don’t want to torment her with false hopes or unrealistic proposals. I don’t want her to hear one word about this idea unless we have solid evidence that it can work. Solid evidence, by the way, is a verified official letter from Granat that says, "yes, we are interested in pursuing this, and yes, we want to meet her face to face."

That’s all for tonight.

Sincerely,
Peter Ginsberg

well peter I have read your proposal several times. First thing I want to say is her name is Schapelle Corby not Corby Schapelle. The second thing is I personally dont think its a very good idea. I dont think thats how the system works in indonesia. If she was being help captive by Granat then sure but shes being help by the Indonesian government. The third thing is you say dont tell Schapelle or her family about the idea but you posted it on a public forum. I don't quiet follow....

Anyways nice of you to be thinking of Schapelle dont forget you can always leave her a message here or send her a letter.

Default An Apology, and another go

Dear Admin:

Sorry for my errors. I will be more careful in future.

This is not about justice, it’s about politics. Schapelle Leigh Corby got 20 years in jail because the Indonesian government had to show progress in the war on drugs.

Indonesia has a huge drug problem. School children are taking heroin over there, people are selling their bodies and dying of Aids, and the public has pretty much lost it. They are lashing out in all directions, and SC wound up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What are they supposed to do now? Admit that they made a mistake? They will look like idiots. They will give their people the impression that they are being soft on crime, and giving preferential treatment to white foreigners – and we all know where that’s going to lead!

This is a political problem, and you need a political solution. You solve it by signing up a strong ally inside Indonesia, and giving the government a credible excuse to do the right thing.

I know perfectly well that Granat isn’t holding her! That’s not why I want to talk to them. I want them for political cover.

She’s a wonderful person. She loves the people of Indonesia and would never hurt them. We know that. But they aren’t buying it. That’s what I’m trying to get across to you guys.

We have to present her to the people of Indonesia in terms that they can understand; and I can think of only one way to do that. Stop talking to them about her problems, and start talking to them about their problems.

You have been trying all kinds of sensible and realistic ideas for three years. Maybe its time to try something stupid.

Sincerely,
PG

Default Implementation

Hey Trish25:

I really gotta talk to the Admin about getting my ID changed to Crazy Canuck. Should have thought about that in the first place.

Implementation takes place in three phases.

Phase 1: Initial contact with Granat. The ideal candidate for this role is a friendly Indonesian contact that already knows Granat. Failing that, we send them a letter and hope for the best. If they laugh at us, fine. If not.....

Phase 2: Meetings between Granat, a core team of Schapelle supporters, and the lady herself. This will be the hard part. Granat will demand all kinds of unreasonable conditions. The supporters will want to tie this to the Bali 9 and other issues. Both sides are going to have to compromise.

Phase 3: Development of a joint proposal to both governments for immedate transfer to Australia, release on parole, and community service.

Strangely enough, I am not too worried about the government to government talks that follow Phase 3. At this point I am willing to bet that the Indonesian government is getting sick of this whole thing and would love to get rid of her.

Hope this helps.

... and the catch 22 there for schapelle is that she dearly loves bali and it's culture, if she were to be released early there is always the possibility that she would not be welcome back.

people may think "why would she want to go back" - the fact is bali was a place that schapelle loved and enjoyed visiting, also as we know her sister spends a lot of time there with her husband and children who are native to bali.

it's such a terrible situation for schapelle all round and has ruined her life in many ways.

Default Don't be Sad

Cheer up, l'il Possum.

If by some miracle we manage to pull this off, and things work out the way they're supposed to, they'll be inviting her back for conferences. How cool would that be?

Seriously, though, no one on our side seems to have anything good to say about Granat. I keep asking if anyone has ever tried to walk to them; so far, I don't have a clear answer.
