Default Schappers!—the musical

Schappers! The Musical

The Foreign Minister said it had turned into a soap opera. Where’s the melodrama in that? Not good enough, Mr Downer. There’s not enough soap to wash us clean this time. This transcends daytime TV. This is not just writ large in the Australian psyche, this is the Australian psyche. This is more than just another story of a little Aussie battler. It’s about knee-jerk xenophobia and good ol’ Aussie jingoism. It’s about us-versus-them stereotypes. It’s about parasitic, exploitative opportunism. It’s about corruption. Most of all, it’s about time.

This is Schappers!—the musical.

Or it’s the cast list, at least.

The prisoner

Schappelle Corby – Toni Pearen

Corby Family

Mercedes Corby (sister) – Magda Szubanski

Rosleigh Rose (mum) – Penny Cook

Michael Corby (dad) – Bill Hunter

Clinton Rose (half-brother) – Chopper Reid

Australian political and government figures

John Howard – Marcus Graham

Alexander Downer – little Aussie battler Quentin

Philip Ruddock – Charles “Bud” Tingwell

AFP commissioner Mick Keelty – Lucky Grills

Corby defence team #1

Lily Lubis – Jenny Kee

Vasu Rasiah – Kamahl

Robin Tampoe – Jack Thompson

Corby defence team #2

Pistol-packin’ Hotman Paris Hutapea – Aaron Pederson

Indonesian soap star Anisa Tri Hapsari – Christine Anu (with Nikki Webster as a body double for nude scenes)

Indonesian legal figures

Chief judge Linton Sirait – Kyle Sandilands

Other judges – Mark Holden, Marcia Hines

Prosecutor Ida Bagus Wiswantanu – Lex Marinos

People getting in for their 2 cents’ worth

Russell Crowe – Craig McLachlan

Lindy Chamberlain – Meryl Streep

Corby “supporters” and people who may or may not have had any business being involved

Ron Bakir – Eddie Maguire

Prisoner John Patrick Ford – Eric Bana

This is a story for the Australian people to write. And, hell, maybe some of those little Indonesians can have a say if they want. After all, we like’em when they’re braiding our hair or massaging our backs on Kuta Beach.

Schapelle boards the plane in Sydney. Music fades in: A Redgum song…

Went through my bags like McCartney in Japan
I didn't have a thing so I didn't give a damn
You can't trick me
'Cause I've been to Bali too

You've been to Paris and you've been Boston
You've been to Fiji and you've been to London
But you can't impress me
'Cause I've been to Bali too…

Sample from The Mudd Club

Golly!!!

I don't know whether to laugh or cry, or whack someone with my handbag.

Laughing and making fun of Schapelle and her awful situation makes my blood boil but I must admit I got the giggles when I read Quentin as Alexander Downer and Eddie Maguire as that shameful, Ron Bakir.
