It has been one year since Unofficial Black Friday. One year since that awful court room fiasco. And in that year people like Mick Keelty and Derryn Hinch have said Schapelle's large and continued support is only because she is "good looking". In that year we had an Australian underwear model, Michelle Leslie, who was busted in Bali with drugs. So if the Keelty-Hinch Theory is true, here is the perfect opportunity to prove it, for surely an underwear model would garner more public support than say - a beauty therapist. WRONG !!!!!
In that year Renea Lawrence had her term reduced from life to 20 years - for being found with heroin strapped to her body. As opposed to marijuana found in luggage. According to an Indonesian official, Lawrence's crime is a lesser offence than the crime Schapelle was 'found guilty' for. And why? Because Lawrence was about to export the heroin out of Indonesia, where as the the marijuana in Schapelle's bag was coming into Indonesia, importing, which is worse. Also they don't see heroin as being any worse than marijuana. However, Schapelle and Renea are good pals in jail, and I for one was really happy for Renea, and I know Schapelle will be to. Schapelle has had to look after Renea quite a bit, hopefully this will make things better all round. Colonel Bambang Sugiarto, head of the Balinese drug squad has famously said that Schapelle's case should never have gone to trial. Sugiarto estimates that the prosecution only accumulated a 50% case against her - well below par by what he considered normal standards of law. Indonesian police contaminated the evidence by not wearing gloves, never tested the marijuana for point of origin, contaminated and never fingerprinted the 2 vacuum sealed bags, and had no Denpasar airport cctv footage. January 12, 2006, Schapelle's sentence increases from 15 years back to 20, after prosecutor's counter appeal succeeds in the Indonesian Supreme Court. News breaks a week later. March 17, 2006, the crucial marijuana evidence was burned. What was left of it that is. Former Corby Lawer Hotman Paris Hutapea put the bag on a scale in court, had it re-weighed and claimed it was missing more than half a kilogram of marijuana. The bag weighed in at 3.6 kilograms, but Judge Linton Sirait refused pleas for digital scales initially used to weigh the bags to be brought to the court to confirm the reading. The weight showed there was about 400 grams missing. The bottom of the bag had been cut open and sealed back with tape... I do not believe Schapelle will have to serve out another full 19 years. I hope it's true she will get reductions in sentence for good behavior etc. She is not interested in joining any prisoner exchange program - and one doesn't even exist yet. She had conjunctivitis in March, I'm not sure how her health is now. And if it is to be 19 years - then I'll be at the airport with a pot gut and grey hair to wave and yell and go crazy. I'll be 59. ****. May 27, 2005, Unofficial Black Friday. |
