Eureka 1854
Ballarat Victoria Australia

The Eureka Rebellion on the 3rd of December 1854 has been the only civil insurrection to occur in Australia. The battle at the Eureka Stockade was a revolution, a lasting symbol of the struggle against injustice and oppression and a defining moment in the creation of the Australian spirit – fairness and a ‘fair go’ for all.

Like the storming of the Bastille and the Boston Tea Party before it, the Eureka Rebellion was the culmination of the refusal of citizens to be oppressed by unfair government and laws.

It was an important step in the establishment of democratic principles, including 'taxation with representation', and the right of each person to have a say in how they are governed, along with the Australian notion of 'a fair go for all'.

The themes underlying the discontent on the Ballarat goldfields still carry potent meaning in contemporary Australia: issues of freedom, human rights, democracy and national identity.

Has Schapelle had "a fair go"?
Not even close!
So out comes the spirit of Eureka....still strong 153 years later.
